Rooster – a fertile adult male chicken.
(For the culinary use of chickens, see Chicken as food.) The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a large and round short-winged bird, domesticated from the red junglefowl of Southeast Asia around 8,000 years ago. Most chickens are raised for food, providing meat and eggs; others are kept as pets or for cockfighting. Chickens are common and widespread domestic animals, with a total population of 23.7 billion as of 2018, and an annual production of more than 50 billion birds. A hen bred for laying can produce over 300 eggs per year. There are numerous cultural references to chickens in folklore, religion, and literature. In the realm of chickens, there's a whole lexicon: Biddy, a term for a freshly hatched chick or an older hen. Then there's Capon, which denotes a neutered male bird. Chick, the word for the youngest of them all. Chook, an informal Aussie or Kiwi way of saying chicken. Cock, the proud rooster, ready to strut his stuff. Cockerel, his younger counterpart, still finding his crow. Hen, the matriarch of the flock. Pullet, a young miss just starting out. And there's the Rooster, the seasoned male, king of the coop, especially over in North America. Down South, they might call them Yardbirds, lending a bit of local flavor to the conversation. But it's not just about names. Sometimes, chicken takes on a broader meaning, like out on the Hen and Chicken Islands. In more scholarly circles, you might hear them referred to as common fowl or domestic fowl, emphasizing their place in our lives. (But Kogucik is actually a cockerel).
